VIEW FROM THE VOX: LAMARR HOUSTON is an UFA DE with the Oakland Raiders, and by all accounts will hit free agency in a month and change and maybe as a hot commodity. After a glance at the Raiders defense (or lacktherof) it's clear Houston was the best of a bad bunch.

He's not a great sack guy and seems from afar more like a LDE than one to replace JARED ALLEN if the team opts not to retain 69's calf-roping services. Houston, to be a fifth-year guy from Texas, managed a career-best six sacks last year and has averaged four a year during his career. He has played in every game during his four-year career and clearly is durable. I also was told today he is very stout against the run. Houston has only five PDs during his career and had none last year. Batting that rock at the line of scrimmage is a very underrated facet of a DL. To wit, Cincy's MICHAEL JOHNSON led all DL last year with eight.

It feels like to secure his services it would cost around $11 million guaranteed and I am not sure I am interested. If we move on a DE via free agency it would need to be a big-time pass rusher from the RDE spot -- HARDY, Johson, etc. -- and at $11 million guaranteed or more Houston probably would absorb around one-half of our FA money.

I am and have been in favor of re-signing DL EVERSON GRIFFEN and giving him a shot at the RDE spot or keeping him as a speedy rotation guy. Nabbing Houston could mean we could get him and another high-ender via FA and moving on Hardy or Johnson -- both RDEs -- means that may be the entire offseason of free agency.

I have heard good things about Lamarr Houston and believe in ZIMMER'S defense he'd be okay but there are others I'd prefer before him.
