Minneapolis, MN - As an Athletic Director at a division one college, your range of responsibilities varies greatly. At the University of Minnesota, Norwood Teague's responsibilities have unfortunately included quelling rumors of our coaches leaving the University and heading else where.
Such was the case Wednesday afternoon as Norwood Teague took to the airwaves with KFAN 100.3FM and Dan Barreiro.
Addressing rumors that the University of Tennessee has interest in first year Gophers basketball coach Richard Pitino, Teague squashed the fears by saying that the Tennessee has not contacted Minnesota with interest in Pitino.
"[Richard] will be here," Teague told Barreiro. "I am extremely confident and assured that we're in great shape with him being here and staying here. We've both got a lot of work to do together."
In his first year as Gophers head coach, Pitino led Minnesota to a 25-13 record and an NIT championship in New York earlier this month. With the combination of mid-range success, a post season championship and the intangible that is the Pitino name, this will likely not be the last time we hear Richard's name pop up with vacant coaching positions around the nation.
"We've got a rising up and comer to say the least," Teague said of Pitino. "But he is solid here, I'm not being vague but he's not interested in [Tennessee]."
Teague even went on to guarantee that barring some unforeseen medical malady, Richard Pitino will be the coach of the Golden Gophers when the congregate at Williams Arena next fall to raise the NIT championship banner.
