Coaches' Notebook - Teddy To Play With First Team Offense

Mankato, MN -Wednesday afternoon brought head coach Mike Zimmer back to the podium and he had some interesting news to share about Friday night's preseason game against the Raiders.

Teddy will get time with first team offense...
I had been speculating it for the past few days, but Wednesday afternoon Coach Zimmer confirmed it. There will be some overlap on Friday between Matt Cassel and Teddy Bridgewater playing with the rest of the number one offense. "Teddy will get some reps with the first team," Zimmer said. "When the lights come on, it's a different deal. It'll be good for him and how he reacts to seeing different defenses that he hasn't seen very much of, how he has to readjust to the blitz, how he gets the ball out and make the right calls, how he plays under pressure. I anticipate he's going to play very well." Matt Cassel will still get the "start" on Friday but the rookie will likely play a part of the first quarter and the entirety of the second.

Matt Cassel came in to Training Camp ready for a fight...
Even though he signed a two-year deal with the Vikings this past off season, Matt Cassel took a different approach to preparing for this year expecting there to be a battle between him and rookie QB Teddy Bridgewater. "He worked real hard this off season," Zimmer said of Cassel. "It's the first time in the off season, I believe he told me that he's done the things he's done with strength training, actually, he worked with a baseball pitching coach and some of the motions and things like that." Cassel currently holds the top spot among the QBs but many expect that to change if Teddy goes out and has a at least a mediocre performance in the preseason.

Jasper Brinkley continues to have stronghold on Middle Linebacker Position...
Many people didn't believe in Jasper Brinkley when he re-signed with the Vikings this off season, but so far this year he's been impressing the coaches with his fit into this scheme. "I think he's catching onto the system pretty well," Zimmer said of Brinkley. "I hear the communication better, I see the alignments a lot better...for him it's the same thing with these other guys, when we get out on the field Friday night, do they go haywire or do they sit in there and they keep doing what we've been coaching them to do."

Vikings release Tight End AC Leonard...
After missing about a week's worth of practices with what's being described as "headaches", the Vikings opted to release AC Leonard on Wednesday. Leonard flashed early with the Vikings but frustrations seemed to boil over surrounding his injury situation. Asked about it repeatedly the past five days, Zimmer simply threw his hands up in the air and said "I guess it's headaches, I don't know" in an exasperated tone. Team spokespersons opted no comment when asked about the situation Wednesday.
