Vikings Release 2014 Schedule

Posted April 23rd, 2014 @ 5:43pm

Minneapolis, MN - Despite the feelings that most of us had last season, not everything that comes out of a 5-10-1 season is bad. First, there is that 8th overall selection in the 2014 NFL Draft that could deliver something promising for the future. Second, with a fourth place divisional finish, there comes a fourth place weighted (easier) schedule for the Vikings in 2014!

The schedule, which was released moments ago, represents the start of the new season for the Vikings who look to benefit from the likes of other down-trodden teams  like the Rams, Dolphins and Buccaneers. But then again, all of those teams are also looking to benefit from playing a down-trodden team like the Vikings...

With the state of the NFC North completely up in the air due to four poor defensive units, anything can happen in each of the six divisional games this season Green Bay remains the odds on favorite, but there are flaws on that roster as well. The Vikings' move to TCF Bank Stadium will surely have an impact on some of these late season divisional games that could mean the difference between the playoffs and the couches for some teams. Given the fact that the other three divisional teams are pass heavy offenses, the cold weather at TCF Bank might very well lead to an unexpected home field advantage for the Vikings in 2014.

Some Schedule Notes/Observations:

On the Road Again: For the 7th time in the past 9 seasons, the Vikings once again open the season as the visiting team. Their last visit to the Edward Jones Dome was in 2012 when Adrian Peterson led the Vikings to a 36-22 victory with 212 yards on the ground.

New Orleans - Sept 21: Week 3 matches the Vikings against the 4th best statistical defense in the entire NFL. Allowing jut over 305 yards per game to their opponents in 2013, the Saints were stalwarts through the air yielding less than 200 yards passing per game. On the other side of the ball, the Saints aerial attack will prove to be a problem for a young Vikings' secondary.

New England - Sept 14: Tom Brady and the New England Patriots return to Minnesota during week 2 for the first time since 2006 when Brady picked apart a disheveled Vikings' secondary on his way to a blowout victory. In fact, Brady is 3-0 in his career against the Vikings and the Patriots have never had a losing season under the leadership of their star QB.

Chicago - Dec 28: Jared Allen will return to Minnesota for the first time as a visitor on December 28th for the week 17 regular season finale with the Chicago Bears. Allen, who spent the past six seasons in purple, is the Vikings single season sack leader (22) and tallied 85.5 sacks during his stay with the Vikings.

The Outdoor Cold Weather Factor? The Vikings play 2 games on the road this December in either warm(Miami) or neutral(Detroit) conditions, but they bookend the month with home games at TCF Bank Stadium against the New York Jets and the Chicago Bears. The cold weather could play a major factor in both of those games, especially if the Vikings happen to be in the playoff hunt.
