Report: Vikings asking Riley Reiff to restructure his contract

The Minnesota Vikings made a splash trade over the weekend, acquiring Pro Bowl defensive end Yannick Ngakoue from the Jacksonville Jaguars. Ngakoue has already reduced his salary for the 2020 season to make room for the Vikings cap situation.

Chad Graff of The Athletic reported that the team has now asked their starting left tackle to restructure his contract to create more cap space. Riley Reiff has started for the Vikings since 2017 but the team informed him that he must decide on a restructure before Tuesday’s practice.

Ezra Cleveland was drafted in the second round and could be the long-term replacement for Reiff. However, he hasn’t taken reps at left tackle during camp and has seen his action at the left guard position.

According to OverTheCap.com Reiff is scheduled to make $10.9 million dollars in 2020. The Vikings would save a total of $8.8 million dollars if they decide to cut Reiff and aren’t able to figure out a way to restructure his contract.

When Reiff got a veterans day off on Sunday Brian O’Neill bumped to the left tackle position and Oli Udoh was given the reps at right tackle. If the Vikings are forced to cut Reiff they would be forced to start some younger, unproven players.
