Report: Vikings to interview Tyke Tolbert for Offensive Coordinator opening

The Minnesota Vikings should be busy this offseason, but a few hirings need to happen before they can hit the ground running in 2021. Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Vikings plan on bringing in Giants Wide Receivers Coach Tyke Tolbert for an interview for their Offensive Coordinator role.

Tolbert has been with the Giants since 2018, but he spent the seven years prior in Denver where he worked under former Vikings offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak. Despite now looking for the sixth offensive coordinator in six seasons, the Vikings’ front office has stressed keeping continuity around the offense and Kirk Cousins.

Cousins is certainly used to changing signal callers year-over-year but keeping a familiar system could help the Vikings’ quarterback continue to grow within the offense.

Mike Zimmer has also made it a point to bring in coaches with a lot of experience. Tolbert won a Super Bowl with Kubiak and would bring the most familiarity to the scheme that he installed over the last two seasons.

Tolbert started his NFL career back in 2003 with the Arizona Cardinals. He has coached wide receivers on five different teams, but he has never been a play-caller at the NFL level. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as fresh eyes could potentially open up the Vikings offense more in 2021.
