Given the current cap situation it was obvious that the Vikings were going to have to find a way to get underneath the cap before free agency. Another move was announced on Wednesday and it results in another hole being added to an already thin offensive line.
The release of Riley Reiff frees up $11.75 million in cap space for the Vikings. Despite losing one of their better performing linemen from just a year ago, the team now has some room to work with financially.
Reiff was in Minnesota for the last four seasons and had his ups and downs before having one of his strongest seasons in purple in 2020. Last year the Vikings drafted Ezra Cleveland in the second round, and he could get a chance to play his original position.
Cleveland came out of Boise State as a left tackle before being moved to the interior of the offensive line in training camp. The left tackle role will likely come down to Cleveland, Brian O’Neill or a newly acquired player through the draft or free agency.
