Vikings announce CB Patrick Peterson will wear No. 7

The NFL announced last week that they are allowing some new positions to wear single digit numbers. One of those new positions includes defensive backs and the Vikings had their first player announce the switch on Sunday night.

Vikings new cornerback Patrick Peterson is going back to his collegiate days and wearing the No. 7 jersey.

In order to acquire the number from 2020 seventh-round draft pick Nate Stanley, Peterson is donating new shoulder pads to the Menomonie High School Football program, Stanley’s alma mater.

It’s been a long time coming for the NFL to allow single digit numbers outside of kickers and quarterbacks. However, not all players are making the switch in 2021, due to the NFL making players buy out all the remaining inventory of their original jersey number.

Peterson is the first Vikings’ player to announce the switch, but a few others have been rumored to be interested in switching back to their college numbers. Although it may not happen this year, Dalvin Cook, Justin Jefferson and Cameron Dantzler were a few others linked to having interest in making a switch back to single digits.
