Vikings find their developmental QB early in the third-round

The Minnesota Vikings had a great first night after trading back and still acquiring a top-three tackle in Christian Darrisaw. One of the third-round picks they received from the Jets was used as an attempt to find the successor to Kirk Cousins.

With the 66th overall pick, the Vikings selected Texas A&M Quarterback Kellen Mond.

Mond has been on the Vikings radar throughout the draft process after being named the MVP of the Senior Bowl and putting on a solid performance at his pro day.

Throughout four seasons at Texas A&M, Mond threw for 9,661 yards, 71 touchdowns and just 27 interceptions. There is plenty of room for improvement in Mond’s game, but that’s why this pick makes so much sense. Cousins still has two years left on his deal so the coaching staff will be able to ease Mond into the offensive scheme.

I wrote a full report on Mond back in March and here’s what I said in the article.

Mond has good arm strength, a quick release and shows flashes of great accuracy. He’s capable at escaping the pocket and extending plays but could use some work on his decision making at times.
