The Minnesota Vikings have announced several coaching moves already in 2021 and they just added another name to their staff. According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network the Vikings are hiring Paul Guenther as their Senior Defensive Assistant.
Guenther will play a similar role to what Dom Capers played in 2020, mainly coming up with new ideas for the Vikings’ defense.
The good news for the Vikings is the familiarity that Guenther has with Mike Zimmer’s defensive scheme. He spent six years with Zimmer in Cincinnati and took over the Defensive Coordinator position when Zimmer took the Vikings’ Head Coach position in 2014.
For the last three seasons Guenther has been the Defensive Coordinator for the Raiders, but he was fired after a blowout loss in December of 2020.
Bringing in experienced individuals to take on assistant roles has become a theme for the Vikings over the last several years. Guenther might have struggled in Las Vegas in 2020 but getting someone in Minnesota with his experience should never be looked at as a bad acquisition.
