My Sega Dreamcast, original Xbox, Xbox 360 and PS4 have one thing in common: they were Christmas presents from Santa Claus. Now that I am 25 and Santa has dropped me off his list, I am now having to decide whether or not I'm gonna be a big boy and purchase my own gaming system for the first time this winter. A video released this morning by Epic Games has made that decision very easy.
Epic Games is behind many of the top games on the current generation of consoles including Fortnite, and they have their sights set on the next generation of consoles — the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox One Series X — which will bereleased at the end of the year.
The video they released this morning shows a demo of their new Unreal Engine 5 on the PlayStation 5. It is a dramatic and spectacular example of what is coming with the next generation of consoles, particularly their ability to handle lighting and other little details that these machines will be capable of.
Any doubt that I was going to upgrade to a new console has been squashed. I'm not exactly sure what system I will buy, but I have already started saving up. As big of a jump the current generation of consoles took from their predecessors, this seems less like a jump and more like a rocket launch into the future.
