Vikings News & Notes, Aug. 15: Jaguars Joint Practice, Day 1 | KFAN 100.3

--Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins threw multiple TD passes in 11 on 11 and red zone drills against the Jacksonville defense. Wide receiver Kendall Wright—in a fight with Laquon Treadwell for the Vikings No. 3 wide receiver job—caught one of the scores from Cousins, and moments later Adam Thielen hauled in one over Jaguars safety Tashaun Gipson.

--Safety Terence Newman was one of the only Vikings to hold onto an interception today (several would-be interceptions by Jaguars starting quarterback Blake Bortles weren't finished off by Vikings defenders). Newman will be age 40 in early September, and is one of the lone question marks in the Vikings defense in terms of when will time show its wear (played 56.1 percent of the defensive snaps in 2017).

--Tight end Josiah Price was taken off the field on a cart with an apparent right knee injury. Undrafted in 2017, Price has been waived twice by the Vikings in the last year and subsequently resigned both times.

--Head coach Mike Zimmer said, “I don’t know if [Vikings running back Dalvin Cook] is going to play on Saturday against [Jacksonville] or not.”

--Right tackle Rashod Hill, center Pat Elflein, right guard Mike Remmers, and wide receivers Stacy Coley and Brandon Zylstra were all non-participants at the walkthrough portion of practice—but all were in attendance.

--Defensive end Everson Griffen was a non-participant and not in attendance at the walkthrough portion of practice. The Star Tribune’s Ben Goessling reported afterward that he’s been told by sources that it’s possible Griffen could play Saturday, but that the defensive end’s missed practice all week due to cutting his leg on the end of a table and the cut becoming infected thereafter.

--The first-team offensive line in walkthroughs and in practice today were left tackle Riley Reiff, left guard Tom Compton, center Cornelius Edison, right guard Danny Isidora, and right tackle Brian O’Neill.

--Vikings wide receiver Adam Thielen on the absence of Jacksonville star cornerback Jalen Ramsey at Vikings-Jaguars joint practices: “It’s kind of a bummer that Jalen’s not here because he’s such a great player.”

--In the Jalen Ramsey GQ Interview by Clay Skipper posted this morning, Ramsey was asked about Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins, and said, “I think he’s good. I think he’s a winner. He’s a hell of a competitor. Coming off the play action, he’s the best quarterback in the league. Play action passing, he’s a hell of a quarterback.”

--Vikings wide receiver Stefon Diggs on what makes Cousins so successful as a play-action passer: “He can spin it. He can throw the deep ball really well. And I like to run.”

The Vikings and Jaguars will resume the second of two joint practices tomorrow, and then—a Saturday matinee preseason game from U.S. Bank Stadium.
