Vikings Offensive Coordinator Gary Kubiak officially announces retirement

Denver Broncos v Tennessee Titans

The Minnesota Vikings need to fill several holes on their roster ahead of the 2021 season and it’s now official that they will have to find a new offensive coordinator too.

Gary Kubiak wasn’t expected to return to his Offensive Coordinator/Assistant Head Coach role, but he made it official on Thursday afternoon.

This means that the Vikings will have their sixth new offensive coordinator in the last six seasons.

Mike Zimmer and Rick Spielman have their hands full in attempting to rebuild a roster that got them to 7-9 in 2020. They’ll now have to rebuild with a new play caller for Kirk Cousins, who’s turnover at the offensive coordinator role hasn’t gotten any better since leaving Washington.

Zimmer released the following statement on the retirement of Kubiak:

Gary did a tremendous job with us at the Vikings over the past two seasons. I have a great deal of respect for him as a coach and as a person, and I’m glad I was able to coach with him. He has had one heck of an NFL career as a player, assistant coach and head coach, and I am really happy for Gary and his wife Rhonda as they head off to their ranch. We will all miss Gary at the Vikings organization and wish him the very best.

The offseason just got a little more interesting for the Vikings, as they now have a critical role that needs to be filled to hit the ground running in 2021.
