Report: Vikings signing former Titans CB Tye Smith

Houston Texans v Tennessee TItans

The Vikings learned rather quickly in 2020 that their depth in the secondary wasn’t good enough. After an offseason that included the additions of Patrick Peterson and Mackensie Alexander, it seemed like the unit was ready to make a comeback in 2021.

That’s still the case, but Mike Hughes has since been traded away to the Chiefs while the Jeff Gladney situation is still up in the air. It seems likely that the Vikings have their starting cornerbacks set in stone with Cameron Dantzler, Peterson and Alexander, but there’s still question marks around the depth of the position.

Josina Anderson reported on Wednesday afternoon that the Vikings are adding another piece to their secondary to shore up some of those question marks.

Tye Smith was a former fifth-round pick by the Seahawks in 2015 but he’s been with the Titans since 2017. Over the course of his career he’s been more of a depth piece, having played in 40 games totaling 62 tackles, one interception and two forced fumbles.

Kris Boyd and Harrison Hand are two names that the Vikings already seem to like as depth options in their secondary, so cracking the 53-man roster could be an uphill battle for Smith.

A lot can change between now and August, but the Vikings are going to be rolling into training camp with much better depth in their secondary than a year ago.
